A Knight of the Blind & Other Happenings
By Joseph A. Papavero

The Maspeth Lions have started the year off with a number of great announcements and events to come.  At their February 23rd meeting, the Lions awarded one of their own with the honorable as Knight of the Blind award.  Rev. Vytas Volertas was awarded this great distinction due to his selfless dedication and continued efforts as Lions Chaplain.  Lion Rev. Vytas has been with the club as their chaplain since February of 2008.  As an associate pastor of Transfiguration Church in Maspeth, Rev. Vytas has also served as a liaison between the Maspeth Lions and Project HOPE (acronym for Help Our People Eat), a food pantry based out of Transfiguration, that the Maspeth Lions have contributed to each year.  The Knight of the Blind award is given to a special member who has made extraordinary efforts in serving the community at large.

The Maspeth Lions have several events in the near future to help raise funds for their various causes, including the purchase of another Guide Dog for the blind and to support projects like Juvenile Diabetes, Lions Eye Bank, and countless others.  Here is a list of some of these events:

All of the aforementioned events promise to be great fun.  More detailed descriptions of each event may be found on the Lions website at www.maspethlions.org.  The Lions depend on the community to help them make a difference in everything that they do.  Please try to get involved with a Lion event this year and have a great time making a positive difference in the world.

The Maspeth Lions meet on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month at Connolly’s Corner at 7:30 PM.  Feel free to stop by at a meeting to see what they’re all about.  Annual Dues are just $60.  For more information contact Lion President Joseph B. Papavero at (718)651-3535.  We look forward to hearing from you!
